Information on ESSA meetings from IAAE

Below is an email from Ryan Wise (head of the Iowa Department of Education)  about the January meetings across the state concerning the draft of the Iowa ESSA plan.  The draft will be released on January 6th.  In December, IAAE was invited to a meeting with Dr. Wise to discuss the "well-rounded education" aspects of ESSA and arts education. We hope you can take advantage of these opportunities to represent the arts.
Leon Kuehner, IAAE Executive Director

Dear Colleagues,

We are gearing up for January information sessions to share Iowa’s Every Student Succeeds Act draft plan, and I need your help getting the word out. The Department will release the draft plan on Friday, January 6. The statewide public meetings will then run from January 9-19, with a format that is informational – we will present details about the plan, field questions and take input.

The dates and locations of those public meetings are included below. All meetings begin at 5 p.m. We’ll also plan to have a Zoom link for each meeting so that folks may listen remotely.

I appreciate anything you can do to help us spread the word (via email, social media, website, etc.) about the draft plan and information sessions.

Please note that some days have more than one meeting site. See you in January!

Click continue reading to see the dates of meetings. Some updated dates due to recent weather. Zoom webinar links are included also.

Arts Advocacy Day January 25, 2017

Hello Arts Advocates:

I am pleased to announce the 4th annual Arts Advocacy Day will be held at the State Capitol in Des Moines on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.  There are many new legislators and leadership changes in the 2017 legislature so the need to advocate for arts education is more important than ever.  This year we will be joined by Turnaround Artist John Lloyd Young, Tony Award winning actor from "Jersey Boys".

The schedule will be similar to past years:
8:00 a.m.  Orientation for advocates at State Capitol
8:30 a.m.  Attendance at opening of Iowa House (music by Findley Elementary Choir)
9:00 a.m.  Attendance at opening of Iowa Senate (music by Findley Elementary Choir)
9:15- Noon:  Visits to Iowa legislators
Noon: Lunch served at State Capitol:  Awards presentation to Senator Herman Quirmbach and Rep; Greg Forristall.  Performance by student break dancers from Des Moines who performed at the White House this past spring.  Comments from John Lloyd Young.

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. :  Visits to assigned legislators (if needed) possible House & Senate Education Committee testimony

You may register by visiting the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education website:
http://www.iowaalliance4artsed.org and click on "Register for Arts Advocacy Day".

If you know if anyone else who would be interested in being an arts advocate, please pass this information on to them.

I will sending out final information on Advocacy Day early in January.

Thank you so much for your support of arts education in Iowa!
