It is with a profound sadness that I share with you the cancellation of the 93rd Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference. After patient, careful deliberation, the IBA Board of Directors believes this is the wisest and most responsible course of action for all involved. While attending to our Association’s mission is the goal, the safety and well-being of our members is paramount.
To fill the void, a plan to provide you with options for virtual professional development, including for-credit options, will roll out in the coming weeks. Communication regarding this plan will come in the form of email, and it will be echoed on the Association website.
School performing groups selected for the 2020 conference will be allowed the opportunity to audition again for 2021. Unfortunately, cancelling the conference also means the cancellation of the All Iowa 8th Grade Honor Band. Our Middle School Affairs Committee will work with middle school directors to answer questions. ASBDA and Major Landers Chairs will send out plans and guidance to auditioning students and their families. The IBA Music Advocacy Forum, scheduled for Saturday, May 16 is postponed to a future date. And finally, Jazz Educators of Iowa will soon send out a separate message regarding the Iowa All-State Jazz Bands.
Thank you for your support during these unprecedented and historic times. In the near term, our path forward as an association, state, and nation may be paved with more questions than answers, but together, I know we will persevere.
Most importantly, thank you for the continued care you show -- and love you give -- to your students and each other as we weather this storm together.
There will be more communication to come in the future. Until then, be well and stay safe.
President, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Inc.
